I am new to D-Star and using the OpenSpot2. I have a new ICOM 5100 and OS2 that I will be setting up next week. I have watched many D-Star videos and OS2 videos plus read the manual for both devices. I have increased my understanding; however, there are a couple of gaps in my knowledge that I can’t seem to find the answers too.

Just a few notes on my current D-Star setup:

VE6SWK has been approved on: VE6KM
VE6SWK has terminals that are registered on: VE6KM
Info: No ACCESSPOINT terminal registered

On my VE6KM registration page I have a single terminal registered as the first option. No initial is selected, and I am unable to edit the initial in the first terminal, so I am assuming it is a space terminal.

On the OpenSpot2 I will select Gateway and use the local D-Star Repeater (VE6KM). I am assuming the connection will be as such:

|IC-5100| |OS2| |Internet| |VE6KM|

With this setup and the radio FROM set to the OS2 and the TO (URCALL) set to “CQCQCQ” I will be able to access the VE6KM repeater like I am connected to it for a local call, correct? But you are never making a local call on the OS2 – its always a gateway (or reflector), yes?

Now, the OS2 manual says “If you want to use a gateway, set the URCALL on your radio to the gateway's callsign and remote module”. So instead of “CQCQCQ” I should be setting the radio to “VE6KM B” – using module B, yes? Or should I be selecting the gateway module “G”?

I am also curious if “repeaterless” direct calling is possible. For example, if I set my URCALL to “VE7XXX” could the path to the station ever be:

|VE6SWK on IC-5100| |OS2| |Internet| |OS2| |VE7XXX|

Is this routing possible? Or, if VE7XXX used VE6KM last, then would route VIA VE6KM and everyone on the repeater would hear the call as well?

I will start experimenting, but having a hard time figuring this out from the documentation.

Any insight would be appreciated.
