Hi all, am presently using my phone as a hotspot for OS2(and other things). AT&T will slow service to 128kB after 15 GB of hotspot use. Using D-Star right now. Will 128kB be fast enough? How about for other modes?
Thanks, John

The data rate for any of the ham digital voice modes is low, plus any handshakes, etc. D-Star runs 4800 bps. Double that for DMR.
The bigger issue is the variable nature of the internet and in particular mobile phone based internet.
If you run a speed check app that draws graphs, there are often significant dips, which can cause momentary dropouts. It’s not an issue for web browsing, or watching YouTube where there is a significant buffering. However, even with a high “de-jitter” setting you are not completely immune to the issue. The recommended setting is in the manual, it suggests at least 1000mS for a 3G or 4G connection.

Dave, thanks for answering. I’m using abt 1GB/day so far - will get to test 128kb fairly soon.

128kbit/s is more than enough, however, if your phone starts using this small bandwidth (like downloading something), then it may get congested fairly quickly.

GOOD GRIEF !!
Are you using your phone as the modem for Internet access 24/7 or something?? That's A LOT of data to be using o'er day FOR ANYTHING [emoji44][emoji15]
You might wanna look into a home WiFi setup. If you're a vord cutter like I am, you could probably run your entire Ham station (Including your Hotspot) on a Mesh Network (There ARE Hams who do this)
Otherwise, I'd look into getting one of those 4G LTE Home WiFi setups (If you look around on YouTube, there's videos that go into what you need to get set up with something like that)
But either way, you've GOT to GET OFF the phone when you're at home (Otherwise you're going to be throttled EVERY MONTH)
Hope this helps
