I've been tracking a station near me that appears bogus. It's been reporting via APRS-IS for several months now using a callsign that is not (and never has been) registered with the FCC. The station is KB5KAL and shows he is using an openSPOT2. It's using a dynamic IP address from a block belonging to a local internet provider, so I assume it's location is fairly accurate although it's reportedly in the middle of a highway intersection so maybe it's just based on a LOC grid coordinate. It changes APRS-IS servers each day or so, bouncing around the world so it must be using a rotating server domain. The call doesn't appear to have an ID registered from any major digital system (DMR, DStar, Fusion, etc.) so I'm not sure what the openSpot's being used for. We've thought about a fox hunt but now sure which frequencies to start with.
Any ideas or help?
