OpenSpot3 and SMS

Hi,

I have not been able to send and receive sms's when connected to the OpenSpot3. 🤔

Using the Brandmeister network and my radio, an AnyTone 878 is working fine with sms, when connected to Brandmeister via a repeater.

Have found the log and taken a screen dump.

Any ideas?

Make sure you've ran DMR AutoCal, or manually change the RX offset on the Modem page for the lowest BER.
Make sure your BM SelfCare has the right setting for your transceiver.
Make sure "Handle messages to/from source ID" is not checked on the DMR SMS page.

Thanks for your reply. 👍🏻

Have tried with the AutoCal, and after several tries running AutoCal, i end up with either +300, +200, +100, -300, -200 or -100 Hz in correction of the RX frequency.
BER went up to a bit over 6%, so tried manually, about +35 Hz, and BER came below 1%.

Moving the radio while pressing ptt makes the BER go up and down a bit.

Have not really used sms a lot so don't know what to expect from it, but seems to be a bit tricky.

Can send sms directly between the radios.
And to the 262993 WX & METAR service,
where i now have managed to set up the radios and SelfCare on the Brandmeister page, so that it's very reliable - it works through the local Brandmeister repeater (Hytera).

Have looked at the "Handle messages to/from source ID" setting in both my OS3's, and the box is unchecked.

So far haven't managed to send and receive sms through either of my two OS3's, with either of my two 878II Pro's (different production dates).

Have to investigate a bit further ...

Tried to send an sms through the OS3 web-gui.

After it was sent, the OS3 rebooted.

So tried again, and again OS3 rebooted. 🤔

I have been able to send position messages from my AT-D878UV2 via Brandmeister DMR using my OS3 and they end up in the APRS-IS, but any attempts to send SMS messages result in failure.

I can send and receive SMS via my Pi-Star hotspot and local DMR repeater successfully. I note though, that sometimes the radio tells me that it failed to send an SMS, but the send was successful and a response is received. No such luck though, sending via the OS3.

I too am interested in a solution.

Hi g0hww,

I have set up my D878V2 to "M-SMS" for use on Brandmeister.

Also have set my radio as "Chinese Radio" on the Brandmeister selfcare page.
Tried to select "Motorola" instead, as in the radio, and actually do receive sms's from that 262993 service, but all sms's are received twice. 🙂
See screenshots.

To set up the sms service from 262993, i first configure the service by sending

CONFIG ON
CONFIG DELAY 5
CONFIG SHORT

each line as an individual sms, to 262995.
You should receive a confirmation sms for each change you make.

Have read a couple of other places, to set CONFIG DELAY 10, for the 878 radios.
Tried that and didn't see any difference.

Hi again,

Was doing a bit of testing this morning.

Have two OS3.

One i mainly use for Norwegian TGs on Brandmeister.
The other i mainly used for Danish TGs, either on Brandmeister or DMR Plus.

Both use the DMR ID 2425024.
Us two extra digits after the DMR ID.

So for one OS3 it would be 242502425 for Norwegian TGs on Brandmeister.

And for the other OS3 it would be 242502459 for Danish TGs on Brandmeister.

Have more profiles in each OS3,
so by changing profile, i change the last two digits of the DMR ID to keep different TGs for the different profiles.

With a private call to 900x the OS3 changes profile, DMR ID and RX TGs at the same time.
Nice and easy. 🙂

Have two D878V2 radios,
one uses DMR ID 2425001,
the other uses DMR ID 2425024.

This morning, after writing the previous message here, I tried sending sms's with gibberish texts between the two radios, while using the local DMR repeater connected to Brandmeister, LD9TN.

To my surprise I could send and receive sms's from/to both radios - via the repeater.

Didn't manage that before. 🤔

It worked just by turning on both radios.

Then i managed to send sms's from one radio,
first through one OS3,
then through the other OS3,
to the second radio, still listening to the repeater , LD9TN.

Didn't manage to do that before either. 🤔

Then I set both radios back to the repeater and tried again, via the repeater.
No luck, with either of the radio's. 🤔

Then tried one radio on an OS3 and the other radio still on the repeater.
No luck now either. 🤔

So really not sure what is happening.
Sitting in the same couch, in the same living room, with the same two radios and the same two OS3.

One thing though, never managed to receive an sms with a radio on either OS3,
only managed so send sms's through the OS3's.

Didn't manage to receive an sms via the web gui in the OS3 either.
Every time i try to send from the web gui, the OS3 reboots. 🤔

Not sure how the Brandmeister network knows where to deliver the sms?

If i have 10 radios with the same DMR ID, will Brandmeister send the sms to all 10 radios, and all 10 radios should then receive the sms, if they are all switched on and listening to a TG on the Brandmeister network?

I could use Signal, WhatsApp or Telegram on my android phone, for more private stuff, of course, but would be nice to have things working on the radio. 🙂

My 878UV2 seems to work nicely with the SMSC via the local repeater (running Pi-Star) and my Pi-Star hotspot. My config on the SMSC is similar to yours, but I went for the 10 second delay. On Brandmeister Selfcare, I went for the Motorola brand. These settings seem fine for the radio.

Having asked around, it seems very common to receive duplicate messages. Sometimes I notice that one of the duplicates is malformed (truncated), but not always. I have found that receiving SMS via the APRS-IS gateway (234999) can be very spammy indeed, as the APRS sender doesn't seem to get APRS Acks and so retries until retry limit is exhausted. So, these issues seem to be inherent in the BM system.

I am not sure that having many radios with the same DMR Id would be useful for SMS messaging. Whilst I have a GD-77 running OpenGD77 and this new 878Uv2 both configured the same DMR Id (I only have one) and that generally is OK, I would perhaps expect some complications associated with receiving private calls if both radios were being heard on different channels (using different repeaters or hotspots). For SMS, I imagine the complications would be worse. For the private voice call case, I would only expect to answer on one radio anyway. For SMS, we might expect all radios that receive the message to respond. If they are on the same RF channel, that would probably get messy. I'm not quite sure what would happen if they are on different channels, but I doubt if it would be good.

My OS3 is currently configured with my standard DMR Id, with no extension digits. My Pi-Star hotspot does have an extended DMR Id. I will look into chaning that.

I have also confirmed that "Handle messages to/from source ID" is not checked in the OS3 config.

The issue I have with sending SMS via the OS3 seems to be very similar to yours.

Fail" notification on the radio. There generally doesn't seem to be an issue with BER.

It would be good to get confirmation from someone at SharkRF that they can confirm their ability to send and receive SMS messages via Brandmeister DMR through an OpenSpot3.

I've tried so many things to make the AnyTone D878UVII send and receive sms, both via the local Hytera repeater and via the OpenSpot3.

Sometimes it works via the repeater, sometimes not. 🤔

And managed to send and receive sms via the OpenSpot3, by requesting metar data from 262993.

The only way that works for me, is to set the radio to M-SMS, and set the brand as Motorola in the Brandmeister Selfcare section.

And it's not in anyway reliable - when using the repeater, I most of the time, receive the same sms twice (when set to Motorola in BM Selfcare).

Via the OpenSpot3 - i only receives the sms once, when it's actually received.
But can see on the radio, it looks like it doesn't receive the first sms, only the second.

The radio led blinks the same way when trying to receive the metar sms, but the radio doesn't catch the first one through the OpenSpot3.

If i use Chinese radio in BM Selfcare, the radio never receives any sms through the OpenSpot3, and only receives one sms through the repeater.

That is if the radio receives the sms at all.

I'm leaning more towards the D878UVII radio can be a bit problematic.

Between the two radios there's no problem.

I don't plan to use the sms functionality a whole lot, but would be nice if it worked properly. 🙂

Have set up digital APRS on both radios, and that works well it looks like, when looking at aprs.fi. 🙂

Never had a failure message in the display when sending sms, always gives me the green ok icon.
So the radio is sending stuff out ok.

Have tried disabling the 'power save' in the radio, makes no difference, thought maybe the radio took a nap too often. 🙂

Hi Alex! Thank you for your report. The cheap Chinese radios do not always meet the DMR standard. They often release another firmware patch. You can also send SMS via Openspot web interface. Have a nice weekend!

I would like to reopen this thread. As of may 2023, using openspot 3 latest firmware, SMS receiving from Brandmeister on an Anytone 878 UV-II plus (latest firmware 3.02N) via openspot 3 is still not working.

The SMS is received on the openspot and is displayed in the "SMS chat" if the box "handle SMS to this ID" is checked.
But if you uncheck the checkbox, the SMS is forwarded in an incorrect format to the anytone, which does not recognize it (and therefore does not display/save it).
I would like to point out that the problem does not come from the TX configuration, nor from the Brandmeister selfcare configuration, because the whole SMS system works perfectly with my other hotspot (pi-star).

There is clearly an issue in the management of SMS from Brandmeister with the anytone using openspot 3.
(I'm not saying that the anytone has perfect SMS handling... however everything works fine using pi-star hotspot)

Even if it's not necessarily a very used function, it would be nice if this bug was finally fixed.
