M1KE Causing Beeps on AllStar Nodes

N9KIW

Sorry for multiple posts, I realized I hadn't tagged the M1KE. I've noticed that when I'm connected to an AllStar node with my M1KE, users with AllStar nodes hear a series of 7 or eight beeps after they unkey. This goes away if I disconnect or connect with another mode. I've noticed this with a couple of other ham friends and it was confirmed when I checked into a net the other night. AlloStar users, and one ClearNode user, reported hearing the beeps. I believe it only happens when I'm connected as a node and not in web transceiver mode. Has anyone else experienced this or can anyone suggest what setting I might be able to change to get rid of it? Since not all nodes accept web transceiver connections, it would be helpful sometimes to connect as a node.

The M1KE does not send beep sounds. It does send key/unkey event packets when you press and release PTT, so remote PTTs are toggled correctly for repeater nodes. Probably the remote party's software generates these beeps.

HA2NON Thanks for the insight. It must be some kind of telemetry from their end. When I'm logged in as a node, they here the beeps when they unkey.

You have connected to 2 of my AllStar nodes often, different brands, and I hear the annoying beeps when I unkey and others connected to me also hear the beeps when they unkey their AllStar nodes of different makers. SharkRF representative, why is it that I have never heard this on any AllSTar node which I have been very active on AllStar for many years. This above M1ke owner should not have to endure this. I have a m1ke myself and it never causes these beeps no matter who I connect to.HA2NON

Thank you, Larry. As I've tested more and more, users of OpenSpots, Shari, ClearNodes and possibly other nodes have heard these beeps. Folks from SharkRf have told me that my M1KE isn't sending out these beeps and I have no reason to argue. However, when I log into an Allstar node in node mode, node users hear them. I ask that others who can verify this post here and email SharkRf. On a couple of occasions, I've offered to test with folks from SharkRf. Here's a link to an audio file of the sound. Even if my M1KE is the only one in the world with this issue,, I believe that SharkRF, in the name of customer service should want to helpresolve it.

As I wrote, the M1KE does not send these beeps, these are generated by the server or other clients. If you are the server admin then please look at the AllStarLink node documentation to find the node (server) setting to disable these beeps, or contact AllStarLink support and ask for node configuration help.

N9KIW

No, I'm not the node administrator. I'm just an M1KE user whose device is somehow generating these beeps when I connect as a node to other AllStar nodes. This is verry annoying to listeners and I don't want to get banned from nodes because of these beeps! As the owner of a device that is causing these beeps, I feel a responsibility to figure out why it's happening and to stop it; I will not just tell them to figure out why their device is beeping!

Tyrbiter

If SharkRF tell you that the beeps are not generated in their device what else do you think they can do to combat it?

Clearly something in the network connection or other software invoved is causing the problem, the only way of finding out is to log the packets using something like Wireshark either at your end or at the end of the link where the sound is being injected which will require someone to analyse what is happening at a number of different places.

Do you have a recording of the sound or perhaps a link to a video on Youtube indicating the problem?

N9KIW

Tyrbiter To me, there's obviously something about my transmissions or something that happens when I log into a node with my M1KE in node mode. Here's an example of the beeps that happen when node users unkey. As soon as I leave the node, or I log in as a web transceiver, the beeps go away.

N9KIW what node are you connecting to and do you hear the beeps through your m1ke also? If not how are you recording the beeps?

N9KIW

Bob_N5DEA I was connected to a friend's private note and he recorded the beeps on his iPhone. other node users checked into his node reported the beeps as well. They were also heard when I checked into a net on North America talk box.

Tyrbiter

OK, I hear the beeps, 6 short beeps same frequency in a row and then 2 slightly longer descending in frequency.

I suspect you are going to need to ask the Allstar people about this, but just to check does your m1ke stay on transmit during the period when these tones sound or has it already stopped transmitting?

N9KIW

Tyrbiter No. Others hear the beeps when they unkey.

Tyrbiter

N9KIW Others using m1ke devices or different devices?

N9KIW

Tyrbiter Others connected with nodes. M1KE users do not hear the beeps.

Tyrbiter

N9KIW That definitely sounds like internal signalling on the node connections being received and then the nodes themselves generating the audio beeps.

As I said before the Allstar people should be able to work out why this is happening unless there is a silent setting somewhere in the m1ke, but SharkRF say there isn't.

The previous link should take you to an audio file demonstrating the beeps.

I've heard them, SharkRF say that they are not generated by the m1ke so it's clear that they must be an artefact of the Allstar system.

I don't have a m1ke, I can't really help you as I don't use Allstar either.
