ID-52 repeater list issue with openSPOT 4

Hi,

I’m trying to use my ICOM ID-52 with the openSPOT 4.
I added the openSPOT 4 into the "Repeater List" (with USE (FROM) = YES), but it doesn’t show up when I try to select it in FROM (DV mode).

I know this is not an openSPOT 4 issue, but I wasn’t sure where else to ask for help.

I found the reason: if the DUP parameter is set to OFF, the openSPOT does not show up in the list.
The solution is to set DUP– and enter 00000.00 as the offset frequency.

After doing this, the openSPOT appears correctly in the FROM menu and works as expected.

This is a known issue with simplex hotspots, the ID-52 (and other Icom DSTAR radios) doesn't enable the correct settings because it doesn't think that a repeater can be a simplex device. The zero frequency offset fools it into being able to operate with a simplex repeater.

That's because the ICOM software knows the difference between a simplex hotspot and a duplex repeater. It handles both, but the memory entry needs to be set up correctly.

My ID-52PLUS in in front of me as I type this. I own three OpenSpot hotspots (OSP 1, 2, and 4, each with its own simplex frequency), and I have DV memories that work with all of them.

ICOM DV memories have a TYPE settings, with options "DV Repeater", "DV Simplex", "FM Repeater", and "FM Simplex". If you choose "DV Simplex", it works just fine, without even asking for a DUP setting.

Specifically ...

With the radio in DR mode
Menu -> Memory (on "page 2" of the menu) -> Repeater List -> Select a group
Quick -> Add

You will see that the first setting it asks for is TYPE, with the options listed above. If you select "DV Simplex" and then scroll down, there won't be a "DUP" setting below the "FREQUENCY" setting.

FWIW I also have an ID-51 "50th Anniversary". Its menus are labelled a bit differently (i.e. "Menu -> DV Memory"), but the idea is the same - the DV memory slots have a "TYPE" setting with the same four options, and if you choose "DV Simplex" as the type, it won't ask for a "DUP" setting.

I actually guessed it right after doing that shameful DUP– / 00000.00 trick…
I was just too eager to get QRV with my openSPOT.
Setting the TYPE = DV Simplex is of course the proper way, and now it works perfectly.

I hope this will help other ID-52 owners as well.
