DMR ID Database Updates VERY Slow

Post by cyberjew » Thu Nov 01, 2018 3:22 am

Hello,

I just received my Openspot2. Thanks so much for fulfilling the order so quickly!!! This device is a masterpiece!!!

Whenever I choose the option to download the DMR ID database, the download takes several minutes to complete.

I’m on a Gigabit internet connection so I don’t think I’m running into any bandwidth limitations on my end.

Where is the update server located and what is size of the full database file truly 3.5 MB? If so, in theory it should be a very quick download even on slower connections.

Maybe it’s a matter of needing to have update servers in multiple locations around the world? Or is it possible the flash memory in the unit is a little slow on writes vs reads?

Have others experienced this as well?

Perhaps it’s simply because there are so many people getting new devices and are all trying to update them?

Thanks in advance!!!

Yes. Very slowly, it updates.

However, it still functions just fine as it downloads.

Is it slow because of the write to flash memory? Or is there simply not enough bandwidth for the number of connections that are coming in?

The openSPOT2 is optimized for very low power usage. Downloading data updates from the network is not a highly important task so it's done in the most power efficient way.

Still don’t know the way to update the ID database manually, can you show me how?

Thanks a lot.

The device downloads the ID database automatically. If it has been downloaded, the status page, info section shows it's version (like Callsign database version: 201810231858).

My Callsign database version: 201810231858

However, I am wondering if this version is outdated compared with OpenSPOT.

That's the latest version. We plan to release callsign database version updates weekly.
