FW & database download failures

Post by N4RJJ »

Have been trying for the past several hours to download the latest firmware along with the weekly user database update (both collectively and separately) and each time the download will reach between 60 and 95 percent completion and then it will fail. I have had download fail issues before, but they usually will succeed after one or two repeated attempts. This time the download has failed at least ten times over the course of two hours. I have a 4G internet connection. I suspect the very slow rate at which the OSP2 downloads may have something to do with the repeated failures. Would it be possible in another fw update to prioritize downloads so the data rate would be increased? Any ideas/suggestions as to why so many repeated failures are occurring today?

Thanks,
N4RJJ

I'm on cable here, about 50mtrs from the DSLAM.
For the relatively small update files (database and v34) updating
took quite a long time but went without any problems.

Same here this morning. It was awfully slow trying to get 5megs of data downloaded from the SharkRF site. Eventually got it all and things are running fine.

I just received a new OS2. I have 3 OS1's and another OS2 so I am familiar with the setup and configuration. The new OS2 came with FW 41. After setting the local network, I saw an upgrade available. It was the data upgrade. I allowed it to start, let it trickle in and next time I looked it was back at the screen telling me a upgrade was available. It seemed to fail and go into a loop. I did not have this issue with my other OS2 and it shows the latest data download date code with FW 41.

I changed the network connection to a hotspot (my internet connection is 15mb down and hotspot is 50mb down). Got the same error. I then noticed the Beta 43 firmware adds a retry for the data download. I applied the 43 beta and tried the data upgrade again. It still failed the first two times. I left it alone for a while and reported it to RFShark.

At this point, I think I may have an intermittent OS2 but I am not sure. I really want to keep it and not have to hassle with an international return.

I returned to the box later and it had completed. I setup a quick DStar connector and it seems to work but I am questioning the reliability of the box.

Do you guys think its just the data update download that is bad or do I have a bad box?

Please post the log excerpt of a failed data download which shows the error. The latest beta version of the OS2 has a stall timeout of 1.5 minutes and retries downloading 5 times if it is disconnected.

Hello:
I cannot capture the log right now. I did find how to and its a great option. I have been testing tonight and went to V44. Things are working just fine.

I can only speculate that a local network issue existed but as time permits this week, I'll use the new OS2.

Thank you for GREAT support and a GREAT product.

If I experience issues in the next week or two, I will grab the logs and send.

I’ve had an OS2 since they were first released.

The web interface seems to periodically refresh and, if there’s either a database or firmware update downloading when the interface refreshes, the download stops and you have to start all over again.

Things are definitely a lot better than they were a few months ago, but still not very reliable.

Is the file download not a background process that can survive a page reloading?

BTW - this is an upgrade from v47 to v48.

The web interface does not do a page reload by itself. Maybe your browser does it if it detects a communication issue with the OS2's web server. Make sure you have placed the OS2 close to the Wi-Fi router.

Regardless of what causes a browser refresh...network connectivity...the time of the day...the earth/moon/stars not being in alignment...a browser refresh shouldn’t break a download.

The download should be a separate process that’s not affected by browser interactions.

In fact, customers should even be able to go to other places in the admin interface and come back when the download is finished.

But what you’re saying is that, if anything causes interruption to the browser session, even if the hotspot still has great connectivity to the Internet, the download is going to break.

We have never experienced anything like this. We'll investigate the issue in case we can reproduce it.
