What is the purpose of the new half deviation option for C4FM please?

The latest Fusion radio FT70 only works in half deviation mode.

Amazing what they leave out of "modern" entry level radios ?

I suppose they're trying to encourage spectrum efficiency so as to leave all those unused channels pristine...

I've upgraded the firmware. I have the openspot set up with DMR modem and C4FM connector. When stations are talking on C4FM, the audio is out of sync and garbled on my DM-5R Plus radio. Interestingly, it sounds fine on the MD-2017. I realize that this scenario should lay the blame on the DM-5R radio. However, I seem to recall that this was working fine prior to the latest firmware upgrade that added half deviation. Would there be any reason that the DM-5R is not able to process the C4FM audio. Oh, and it works just fine when the openspot is set up DMR/DMR.

C4FM half deviation is only used when the modem mode is set to that.
