private call with a open spot

Post by kb9wlx » Mon Oct 30, 2017 3:51 pm

I want to talk to my friend with a private call. we both are using RF shark open spots.
what talk group should be use?
I was considering tg315 with a private call so not to tie up any repeaters.

Any ideas?

If you start a private call, then no talkgroup use is needed. Just select your friend's contact in your radio's contact list and talk by pressing PTT, or if your radio supports entering a destination DMR ID, enter the dst DMR ID and then press PTT.

If both of you are using hotspots, then you won't even disturb others who use repeaters (you won't use any timeslots on any repeater, as all your traffic will only go through the internet between your hotspots).

are private calls legal on a hot spot as long as they are not encrypted?

Private calls are not private. The conversation is heard on the air using MD380 Tools equipped radio with promiscuous mode turned on. The talk is decoded as long as it is not encrypted. I don't see any reason why private calls should be considered illegal.

When setting up a private call, I understanding that you must push the PTT within 3 seconde after the other OM releases his PTT otherwise the openSPOT wil return to the original talkgroup.
is this correct? Can this time be extended or is there another way to prevent this?

This is a radio-specific setting. Please check your radio's manual.

Norbert,
Any idea which field setting in the CPS software handles this time setting?
I have the TYT MD390.

In the CPS: General Settings -> Talkaround -> Private Call Hang Time

Other cool features of Private Call:
1. Shows on BM dashboard but no speaker icon.
2. Is not recorded or archived by BM.
3. OpenSpot to OpenSpot is indeed private.
4. As long as not encrypted it is legal in US.
