5 ghz support on OS2?

Post by EdAtlanta » Fri Jan 25, 2019 11:57 am

I don't suppose there is a hidden 5 ghz radio included in the OS2 that will be implemented in a future update? It sure would be nice in areas of 2.4 ghz wifi saturation.

Maybe?

I do love my OS2 and OS1 too for that matter.

The WiFi module fitted is 2.4GHz only.

And unless I'm mistaken, 4G / 4G LTE cell phone towers only operate on 2.4 Ghz. anyway so adding 5 Ghz. support really wouldn't accomplish anything

Besides, if you're experiencing THAT much packet loss, you might want to look at OTHER DEVICES on your LAN that might be consuming enormous amounts of bandwidth IMO

Just my opinion though...

The OpenSpot connects to wifi networks not to cell networks so 5 ghz would be beneficial.

Cell phone towers in the United States use 600 megahertz 700 megahertz 800 megahertz 1700 megahertz 1,900 megahertz 2100 megahertz and 2500 megahertz. I might have missed some but I don't think so also, a 5 gigahertz Wi-Fi chip included would be amazing.

You would need to substitute a dual band WiFi module, the effort of supporting WiFi is way beyond the resources available to SharkRF which is why they use a module in the first place. The WiFi firmware would deal with the band-switching as necessary.
