Mobile Hotspot Plans

Post by KB0OXD » Fri Mar 15, 2019 10:44 pm

What is THE BEST Mobile Hotspot plan to run an Openspot on a mobile device AS A PRIMARY source of Internet service??

The reason I ask is because I won't have home WiFi for a month or two AFTER I get my Openspot next month (And I WILL GET ONE now that I know what must be done to pay for it)

My current plan is 6 GB of Mobile Hotspot Data from AT&T's Unlimited Data Plus plan BUT regular ON DEVICE data IS IN FACT Unlimited (This data can be accessed BUT ONLY at 2G - MAYBE 3G speeds)

The price of this plan is $85

Am I looking at this for a price I can expect to pay EVERY MONTH EVEN AFTER I move the Openspot over to my home WiFi once I get it back in the next month or two (I eventually plan to use Mobile Hotspot AS A BACKUP TO my home WiFi & whenever I travel out of range of my big Diamond SG-7900 antenna (Which will also be used to attach to my Openspot to increase its signal range, though I have NO IDEA HOW it'll work in the high terrain area I'm in ESPECIALLY since I'm on the FIRST FLOOR of my apartment building)

What are some of the plans you guys have & about how much do you pay Mobile Hotspot Data ??

I am only paying $45 for my Verizon business account for my iPhone with unlimited everything.

There is no way to connect the Openspot 2 to an external antenna and even if you could range would be very limited so plan on using your mobile hotspot when you go mobile.

Well OK... So I'll have to take my Openspot with me then (No big deal Image)

But the ability to attach an external antenna to the Openspot WOULD be a nice feature to add DESPITE the power limitation Image

Cheers & 73 Image

I believe the limiting factor of range would be receiver sensitivity not transmitter power. The Openspot 1 had an external antenna and some experimented with base station antennas including myself. The most range I am aware of anybody getting was about a mile, not very useful for going mobile.
